With smaller engines and fewer parts, these systems are much easier to work on and maintain. Working on your own bike is a great way to develop your mechanical aptitude, and changing the oil is a great place to start.<\/p>\n<p>Before you get going, find your owner\u2019s manual. It\u2019s full of useful information. Specifically read the section on changing your oil. It will tell you the filter you need, which oil to buy, and how often to change it.<\/p>\n<h3>Supplies<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A stand to keep your bike upright and steady while you work<\/li>\n<li>A drain pan<\/li>\n<li>Gloves and rags<\/li>\n<li>Funnel<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01L1DKSM4\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B01L1DKSM4&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess&amp;linkId=FSXA3GZUT5SFDAZ4\">Strap wrench<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B07FDX517M\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B07FDX517M&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess&amp;linkId=FSXA3GZUT5SFDAZ4\">Torque wrench<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, you\u2019ll need the right oil and oil filter for your motorcycle (which again is found in the manual). If you\u2019re doing this somewhere you don\u2019t want to spill oil on the ground, put down some cardboard and\/or an old towel to catch anything that your drain pan doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Warm Up Your Engine<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s much easier to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/skills\/manly-know-how\/how-to-change-your-motor-oil\/\">change your oil<\/a> when your engine is a little warm, so plan to get started after the engine has been running.<\/p>\n<p>Some service manuals will tell you to warm the bike up to \u201coperating temperature\u201d which means you need to actually ride it for a good 30 minutes before changing the oil.<\/p>\n<p>Warning: On air-cooled bikes, do not start it up and let it sit there idling for 30 minutes. Hold your arm so you don\u2019t spill oil all over yourself, and unscrew the plug by hand. Wait until all the oil has drained into the drain pan.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Remove Old Filter<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-105721 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image3.jpg\" alt=\"changing of filter.\" width=\"650\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image3.jpg 650w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image3-320x194.jpg 320w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image3-640x388.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the flow of oil has stopped, you can change the filter. Use the strap wrench (another option is an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B07H4PB5QM\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B07H4PB5QM&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=stucosuccess&amp;linkId=FSXA3GZUT5SFDAZ4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B07H4PB5QM\/ref%3Das_li_tl?ie%3DUTF8%26camp%3D1789%26creative%3D390957%26creativeASIN%3DB07H4PB5QM%26linkCode%3Das2%26tag%3Dstucosuccess%26linkId%3DFSXA3GZUT5SFDAZ4&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1564242882826000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEwa9n0lmyEwxSqvf7OIpE5hjI4eg\">oil filter wrench<\/a>) to loosen the filter until you can unscrew it by hand. Pour the oil in the filter into the drain pan.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 5: Install New Filter<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-105722 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image4.jpg\" alt=\"Installation of a new oil filter.\" width=\"650\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image4.jpg 650w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image4-320x123.jpg 320w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image4-640x245.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Apply a little oil from the drain pan to the O-ring on your new filter. The oil helps the filter slip smoothly into place and ensures a good seal. Also add a little oil directly into the filter so your engine doesn&#8217;t run dry when you start it.<\/p>\n<p>Install the filter by hand, and turn it until you feel some resistance. Then, turn the filter about a half turn more. Be careful here \u2014 if you over-tighten your oil filter, you could damage the seal.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 6: Replace Sealing Washer<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-105723 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image5.jpg\" alt=\"Sealing washer of drain plug in the hand.\" width=\"650\" height=\"552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image5.jpg 650w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image5-320x272.jpg 320w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image5-640x544.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wipe off the drain plug, and inspect the sealing washer. Most owners&#8217; manuals will tell you to replace the sealing washer every time you change the oil, but this isn\u2019t always necessary.<\/p>\n<p>If the washer isn\u2019t damaged, you can probably reuse it. Just flip it over and put it back on the drain plug.<\/p>\n<p>Some bikes, like my Harley Davidson Ultra Limited, will use an O-ring instead of a washer, so be sure to get an O-ring kit from your dealer before you start the whole process. Snugging bolts in by hand first is important because you will avoid cross-threading, which damages the threads. Once it\u2019s snug, tighten the plug with your wrench.<\/p>\n<p>Again, if you over-tighten the drain plug, you can strip the threads on your engine. A very expensive mistake.<\/p>\n<p>The safest way to tighten your drain plug is with a torque wrench using 14 to 16 foot-pounds of torque, or whatever is specified in your service manual.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 8: Add Oil<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-105725 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image7.jpg\" alt=\"Putting oil in an engine. \" width=\"650\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image7.jpg 650w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image7-320x241.jpg 320w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/image7-640x481.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pour in the oil. Your owner&#8217;s manual will tell you what kind of oil and how much to use.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 9: Check Your Work<\/h3>\n<p>Start the engine, and let it idle for a few minutes. Check the oil levels. Visually inspect the oil filter and the drain plug to see if there are any leaks.<\/p>\n<p>Take the used oil and oil filter to an auto parts store, and they\u2019ll recycle it for you.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it! You\u2019re done.
