It&#8217;s what I wear most days working from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For most of my life, I never tucked in my tees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Like many people my age, I thought tucking in your t-shirt was something <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that only<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> your dad or the dorky kid at your school who had no fashion sense did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Well, I don&#8217;t know if <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">there&#8217;s something that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> happens in brain development when you hit 40, and turn into your father, but I&#8217;ve been tucking in my t-shirt a lot more these days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">And I&#8217;ll be damned; I think it can look pretty sharp in certain situations. Even if you&#8217;re not middle-aged or someone&#8217;s Pops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Below, I offer some guidelines <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> follow when tucking in my t-shirt so that the vibes it gives off are more 1950s Marlon Brando than 1990s Bugle Boy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Evolution of the Tucked-in T-Shirt<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While we wear t-shirts as a regular piece of clothing these days, they were <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">originally<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> underwear. Because they were underwear, men <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">would<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> tuck their t-shirts into their briefs or boxers to create a seamless undergarment beneath their outer clothes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">During WWII, GIs <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">would often remove<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> their buttoned uniform top and just <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wear<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> their undershirt with their uniform trousers.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> They kept their tee tucked in to maintain a clean, disciplined look even though they weren&#8217;t <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in full<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> uniform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After WWII, veterans <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">continued to wear<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> their undershirts with trousers while working around the house. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They kept their t-shirts tucked in because<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, well,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that&#8217;s how they&#8217;d done it during the Big One.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That&#8217;s how most men in the United States wore their tees from the 1950s onward: tucked in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As time marched on and style became more casual in the U.S., more and more men stopped tucking in their t-shirts. Wearing their t-shirts untucked was a way to separate themselves from the more uptight generation of their parents. Contributing to the trend was <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the fact<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that fewer men served in the military after the Vietnam <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">War,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and thus didn&#8217;t get into the tucked-in tee habit while in the service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There was a short resurgence of tucked-in t-shirts<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in the 1990s, but then <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> faded along with Beanie Babies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You&#8217;re starting to see more people \u2014 particularly young people<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of both sexes \u2014 tuck in their <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirts<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> again. A lot of it is driven by Gen Z and Gen Alpha&#8217;s nostalgia for the 1990s. My ten-year-old daughter tucks in her <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirts (emblazoned with the Vans logo \u2014 didn&#8217;t see that resurgence coming either)<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> She loves that &#8220;90s vibe.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Benefits of Tucking in Your T-Shirt<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since I started tucking in my tee more often, I&#8217;ve discovered three benefits to the practice:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A tucked-in tee accentuates your v-shape.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Having the masculine v-shape \u2014 broad shoulders that taper to a narrow waist \u2014 is attractive. When you tuck in your t-shirt, you accentuate your v-shape; it <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">gives definition to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> your waist and makes your shoulders look broader.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A tucked-in <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> looks put-together.<\/span><\/strong> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A tucked-in t-shirt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> provides a clean line between your torso and your legs. It looks a little sharper than an untucked tee, which bunches and wrinkles as it drapes over your waistband. When you tuck in your <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, it looks like you mean business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A tucked-in <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is practical.<\/span><\/strong> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Your untucked t-shirt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> can get snagged on things in your environment. When your <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is untucked, you no longer have to worry about that. This is why I&#8217;ve even been tucking my <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirts<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> into my gym shorts when I work out.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Guidelines for Tucking in Your T-Shirt<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-182675\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2024\/06\/tee.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2024\/06\/tee.png 553w, https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2024\/06\/tee-320x319.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Get a properly fitting T-shirt.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> A <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that is too big won&#8217;t look good tucked in. It will give you that early 1990s Bugle Boy dork look. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You also <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">don&#8217;t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> want to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">go<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> too <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">tight either<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/style\/clothing\/the-best-damn-guide-to-mens-t-shirts-on-the-internet\/#fit\"> We&#8217;ve got the guidelines for proper fit here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Note that a tucked-in <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> looks best on those with a fit physique. If <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">you&#8217;ve got<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a paunch, a tucked-in tee will only accentuate it, and you&#8217;ll probably want to keep your shirt untucked.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Keep it simple.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Opt for t-shirts without prominent patterns, text, or busy designs. Go for simple stripes or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/style\/clothing\/how-to-wear-a-white-t-shirt-with-style\/\">a solid color<\/a>. It will just look sharper. That doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t ever tuck in a graphic tee. I&#8217;ve got a few graphic tees that I tuck in occasionally, but the designs are simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Stick with long pants for your bottom garment. <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I&#8217;ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> tried tucking in my t-shirt with a pair of khaki shorts and it didn&#8217;t look good<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Too<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 1990s dad-ish. Stick with tucking your tees into long pants \u2014 jeans and chinos.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The one exception <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">for shorts that I make<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is when I&#8217;m working out.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Tucking my tee into my shorty gym shorts makes me feel like a Golden Era bodybuilder.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Layer with a jacket. <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Layering your tucked-in t-shirt is something that I like to do. It adds some depth and interest to your look. I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">like<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to wear a cotton field jacket when I tuck in my <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. A jean jacket, chore coat, or unstructured blazer would <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">work as well<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Get a cool belt. <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wearing a cool belt gives you an excuse to tuck in your t-shirt: you&#8217;re tucking in your tee so people can see your rad belt. My go-to belt when I tuck in my t-shirt is the <a href=\"https:\/\/prf.hn\/click\/camref:1100liyHY\/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fhuckberry.com%2Fstore%2Fzilker%2Fcategory%2Fp%2F80241-cowboy-belt\">Cowboy belt from Zilker<\/a> (that&#8217;s what I&#8217;m sporting in the left pic above). <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I also like to rock a thicker, more traditional leather belt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which has<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a cool Thunderbird belt buckle that I found on eBay (right photo). <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Besides adding <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">some<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> visual interest to your tucked-in t-shirt fit, a belt also accentuates your waist a bit more, enhancing your <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">v-shaped<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> silhouette.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Like I said above, I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">don&#8217;t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> tuck in my <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t-shirt<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">all the time<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> But it&#8217;s nice to have it as a styling option to mix into my get-ups.
