{"id":43765,"date":"2014-10-30T12:39:14","date_gmt":"2014-10-30T17:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/?p=43765"},"modified":"2021-06-02T15:40:14","modified_gmt":"2021-06-02T20:40:14","slug":"how-to-replace-a-thermostat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artofmanliness.com\/lifestyle\/homeownership\/how-to-replace-a-thermostat\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Install a New Thermostat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43775 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/thermo.jpg\" alt=\"Thermostat installation on wall. \" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been slowly turning my home into a \u201csmart home.\u201d I want to be able to control my heating\/cooling\/lighting\/electrical systems from anywhere in the world with my tablet or smartphone, just like some space-aged-homeowner-as-imagined-by-1950s-futurists would.<\/p>\n<p>Today I\u2019m replacing my old thermostat with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lyric-Programmable-Thermostat-Geofencing-Amazon\/dp\/B01FTNDGRG\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1512099136&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=honeywell+lyric&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=artofmanliness03-20&amp;linkId=011ae27c61b2f79482e440beb5c9c0b6\">Honeywell Lyric thermostat<\/a> that connects to the web. With the new device, I can change the temp in my house from my phone and I\u2019ll get updates when I need to replace the filter. My dream of becoming George Jetson will be one step closer!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll admit, replacing a thermostat &#8212; with all the wires and the breakers and the electric doo-hickeys &#8212; kind of intimidated a DIY-noob like myself. I didn\u2019t want to make some wrong connection on the new thermostat and blow up my furnace. But after a bit of research, I discovered that replacing a thermostat is pretty stinking easy.<\/p>\n<p>In case any of you ever find yourself needing to replace an old thermostat, I\u2019ve documented the steps below, with photos, on how I replaced my old one with a Honeywell Lyric. Granted, each heating and air conditioning system will have unique requirements for connecting a new thermostat, but the general process is pretty much the same. Consider this your big picture guide through the process.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Turn Off Power to A\/C and Furnace<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/turnoffpower.jpg\" alt=\"Man turning off electrical switch in power panel. \" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Better to be safe than sorry. Turn off the power on the air conditioning and furnace units associated with your thermostat. You can do this by going to your breaker box and flipping off the respective switches. Another way you can turn off the power on your A\/C and furnace is to simply flip off the power switch on the units themselves.<\/p>\n<p>To confirm that the power to your unit is off, adjust the temperature on your current thermostat to either really hot or really cold and see if the A\/C or furnace turns on. If they don\u2019t, you\u2019re golden.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Remove Face of Old Thermostat<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43778 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/removecover.jpg\" alt=\"Man removing cover of thermostat. \" width=\"500\" height=\"353\"\/><\/p>\n<h3>3. Take a Picture of the Wires<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43795 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/image-e1414618128115.jpg\" alt=\"A wiring system of thermostat.\" width=\"500\" height=\"373\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This step isn\u2019t strictly necessary (you\u2019ll see why below) but it\u2019s nice to have a reference for which color wire should go into which receptacle on your new thermostat.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Disconnect Wires from Old Thermostat<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43779 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/remove_wires.jpg\" alt=\"Technician disconnecting the wires from old thermostat. \" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Depending on your current thermostat, you may need a small screwdriver so you can untighten the screws that are holding the wires in place. I had to use a screwdriver that you use for eyeglasses.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Remove Old Mount<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43780 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/remove_old_plate.jpg\" alt=\"Technician removing old thermostat plate. \" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/p>\n<h3>6. Put on the New Thermostat Mount and Connect Wires<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43781 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/connectwires.jpg\" alt=\"Placing new thermostat on wall.\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Connecting the wires on your new thermostat isn\u2019t that difficult. On the mount, you\u2019ll notice that there are letters. Each letter stands for a different colored wire: \u201cG\u201d &#8211; green, \u201cR\u201d &#8211; red, and so on. Simply insert each colored wire in its corresponding initialed receptor. The receptors on the Honeywell Lyric don\u2019t require screws to keep the wires in; I just pushed them in until they locked in place.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Screw Faceplate Mount to Wall<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43791 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/screw_on_plate.jpg\" alt=\"Man tighten the screw of thermostat with screw driver.\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You may need to install some drywall anchors so that you can securely screw on your faceplate mount. Lucky for me there were already two drywall anchors in place behind the old thermostat in exactly the right spot for my new one.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Attach New Thermostat Face<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43792 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/put_on_thermostat.jpg\" alt=\"Man place new thermostat on wall. \" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re having problems with this step, adjust the cognitive thermostat in your brain.<\/p>\n<h3>9. Turn Power Back On to A\/C and Furnace<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43793 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/turnoffpower1.jpg\" alt=\"Man turning off the power switch of thermostat.\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Turn your power back on to the A\/C and furnace. As you can see, I\u2019m using the same image that I used for turning the power off, because it\u2019s basically the same step, and I\u2019m lazy.<\/p>\n<h3>10. Configure New Thermostat<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43794 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/content.artofmanliness.com\/uploads\/2014\/10\/configure.jpg\" alt=\"Man configure the thermostat on mobile application.\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Every thermostat is going to be different when it comes to configuration, so just follow the steps in the user manual that comes with it. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lyric-Programmable-Thermostat-Geofencing-Amazon\/dp\/B01FTNDGRG\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1512099136&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=honeywell+lyric&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=artofmanliness03-20&amp;linkId=011ae27c61b2f79482e440beb5c9c0b6\">Honeywell Lyric thermostat<\/a> connects to your wireless network so that you can configure and control it from your smartphone or tablet from anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The free Lyric app took me through the set-up and configuration process. Besides the usual \u201cAway\u201d and \u201cHome\u201d schedules that you can create on most thermostats, the Lyric lets you create a \u201cGeofence\u201d within the system so that when you leave the house with your smartphone, the thermostat will automatically set itself to a more energy efficient temperature. It also has a \u201cFine Tune\u201d feature that considers both indoor and outdoor humidity and temperature to adjust your settings so that your desired temperature always <em>feels<\/em> the same. I did a few tests on both of those features to make sure they work and all systems were go.<\/p>\n<p>Well, there you go. You now know how to install a new thermostat. Don\u2019t be intimidated by the wires.
